3rd Annual Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards 2001
GALA EVENT
RON CHESPAK DONATES ART

Did you know that Rick produced his own memorial service? A few months before he died, Rick called Meredith Greenburg to his room and told her exactly what he expected us to do. They rehearsed it for days and days, sitting on his bed with a slide projector, boom box, and stopwatch. The service was moving, emotional, funny, and sad.

The first year of this event they staged a similar tribute to Rick. Music and stories were chosen to specifically evoke his memory for those who knew him and to bring to light a little of the man he was for those who did not have that privilege. The Wonderful thing about having the opportunity to put this show together is that with each passing year, the experience becomes less of a memorial and more of a celebration. Celebrating a man whose life was full of music and theatre, whose heart was full of love for people and animals alike, who loved to spend time with his friends and family; Rick would love that we are all here together this evening and may even be a bit embarrassed about all of this fuss in his name. But, Rick would be delighted that a group of extremely talented artists had come together to perform a show with his name on the marquee.

Thank you to all of the performers and musicians here tonight for sharing their talents enthusiastically and willingly. Thank you to everyone here tonight who has given of their time and money to make the Rick Weiss New Hope Apartments and the Humanitarian Award possible. Thank you project New Hope for creating a safe and secure home where people can live with dignity. And thank you Earl Greenburg for bringing together all of your friends, family and associates in a cause that is so close to our hearts and for making this such a special evening.
